PEEBLES will be looking to make progress at the club's own Tweed Homes-sponsored tournament on Sunday on one of the big family days of the year.

"Yes, sevens are important, but this will be a day for everyone to come along and have a great time," said Sevens convener Allan Beveridge.

Peebles is aiming to rival Melrose as one of the major crowd-pullers of the season, and supporters can wander around the grounds and have a good time with their families.

The Kings of the Series moves on to Langholm tomorrow, Saturday, and then Peebles in an unprecedented clash as the Milntown tournament and the cup final are being played on the same day.

Beveridge believes that the Peebles event on Sunday will draw the crowds.

"What we really need is a fair deal from the weather, just like Melrose!" he said.

To add to the rugby, there will be fairground rides, craft stalls, quad bikes, flight simulator, and much more.

One of the highlights will be the new Peebles Cornet-Elect, who will be announced tonight, in the dunk tank!

"I am confident that we will have a good day. The sevens are so important financially to clubs and sometimes I wonder how we will do without them," added Beveridge.

However, in a congested programme, the circuit is being brought into question with teams dropping out or clubs sending just what players are available.

The Danish international side pulled out of the Hawick and Berwick Sevens due to the Icelandic volcanic ash halting all air flights, while local sides Duns and Earlston withdrew from Berwick at late notice, which does nothing for the reputation of the sevens.

Gala, the biggest town in the Borders, has been hit with only 14 sides in its sevens and the host and Selkirk being given byes.

But Selkirk captain, Fraser Harkness, has put the Kings top of the agenda as his club leads with 26 points, one ahead of Kelso and two ahead of Jed-Forest.

Melrose will not be not competing at Langholm due to the cup final, but will defend the Peebles cup.
