TWO of Tweeddale’s most talented teenagers proved themselves once again with great results in the USA last week.
The final round of the UCI World Cup series in Windham, New York state, saw downhill mountain biker Lewis Buchanan pick up his best result of the series whilst Grant Ferguson equally impressed with his fifth place in the cross country race.
Innerleithen racer Lewis was placed 14th in the elite category - despite the 16-year-old still being a junior rider. The result was enough to secure Lewis second overall in the junior world standings, just pipped to the title by Canadian Troy Brosnan.
Grant Ferguson rounded off his season with another podium finish, taking fifth place on the steep, technical course with the mercury tipping 28 degrees throughout.
Both riders are now in Canada gearing up for their biggest competition to date, each hoping to make their mark on the World Championships this weekend.
Peebles High pupil Grant is one of just three junior men picked to compete in Mont-Sainte-Anne, and the 17-year-old will be hoping for a top three finish this Saturday.
Lewis joins fellow Border College students Sam Flockhart and Mark Scott on the junior team, and is the bookie’s favourite to bring home a gold medal, replicating the 2007 success of Ruaridh Cunningham who was crowned the junior world champion in Fort William.
