Peebles Ladies Stableford - The 9-hole Stableford produced some excellent results, with Mandi Bain and Iris French each scoring 21 points, Mandi taking top spot on a countback. The competition was played in conjunction with the start of the Winter League, meaning these two ladies have got their respective teams off to a flying start.

Holes Bowl - Two performances stood out on Saturday in challenging conditions when the Holmes Bowl was played for Peebles male members.

Battling against a tough breeze and wet fairways after the week's downpours, 11-handicapper David Wallace produced a fine round of 77 for a net 66 to take the title. The highlight of Wallace's round was an eagle 3 at the ninth and he belied his handicap by playing the last 12 holes in just two-over par.

John Logan claimed the runner-up spot just a shot behind on net 67, after an impressive scratch score of 71 which included four birdies at the 5th, 6th, 9th and 15th. Logan also took the scratch prize and with it a handicap reduction back down to three, showing it's not just Hibs that have found their form again. Former captain David Watson posted a fine net 68 (14) to take third spot, although three 6s in his last four holes proved costly, while Martin Kelso took a breather from his recent hard work on the committee to finish in fourth spot on net 70.

Membership Survey - A new survey designed to gather feedback on the club and how its run is now available for members to complete. Members can either fill the survey in on-line via the recent e-mail sent by the Secretary, or printed copies are available from the Secretary's Office. The survey is anonymous, so please take the times to give the Committee your thoughts, opinions and suggestions. These should be returned no later than Friday, October 19.

Golf Classic - Peebles Ladies Golf team have had an exciting year of knockout golf in the Mail on Sunday Golf Classic. After winning matches against teams from Minto, Kelso, Duddingston, Kilspindie, Ravelston, Southerness and Eaglescliffe from the Stockton area the team travelled to Manchester last Sunday to compete in the quarter finals of the tournament held at the Marriott Worsley Golf & Country Club. It was hoped that the Ladies would go one step further than the Men's team who reached the same stage in 1994. Sadly however it was the weather that beat them. Strong winds and torrential rain fell throughout the night and into Monday forcing the Organisers, for only the 2nd time in over 20 years, to cancel the matches. The teams to proceed to the semi finals were selected by a countback from previous rounds and sadly the Ladies lost out and will miss a trip to Spain for the conclusion of the Tournament. A sad ending to a successful run but better luck next year.

SLGA Commonwealth Spoons - Over 40 pairs from all over Scotland took part in the Commonwealth Spoons Final at Powfoot on September 13.

Sheila Cuthbertson and Sheila Horsburgh didn't let the poor weather affect them and returned a score of 72.5 to win the coveted trophy. Visit www.slga.co.uk for more details and a photo of Peebles latest national champions!

The SLGA Medal was played in extremely difficult conditions on September 15, with the CSS rising to an unheard of 74. However Lilian Smith returned a five under par 69(29) to win the Bronze Medal, resulting in her handicap being cut to 26, the biggest reduction in the ladies section in what has been a testing season for low scoring. Margaret Fleming scored 76(19) to take the Silver Medal.

David Duthie Scramble - It the early morning mist rather than the usual deluge of rain which threatened last Saturday's Davie Duthie Texas Scramble, but after an hour's delay play commenced in beautiful conditions with superb greens once again. A good turnout was on show for this popular event and it was the quarter of Scott MacKay, Garry French, Alan Thomson and Lindsay Russell who led the way, with a gross score of 60 less 3.8 for a winning total of 56.2. The runners-up were Kevin Wood, Kris Hopkirk, Jamie Morris and Daniel Flannery, just behind with a gross 58 for a net 57.5.

Innerleithen Gents - The Club Super Medal was contested last weekend for those who qualified through the season as medal prize winners.

An excellent par round of 70 by Chris Richards produced a net 66 to take the top prize. Brian Hinton was second with a 68 (7) and Michael McGovern took the final prize in third with a 69 (10). For those non qualifiers a straight forward stroke competition delivered a winner by name of David Philip.

Sunday, September 22 saw the conclusion of the Club knock out competitions. The prestigious Colonel Rough Trophy was won by Paul McEwan and Alan Riddet who scored an emphatic victory over Keith Hay and David Lindsay. Result withheld to protect the faint of heart!

The Cardrona Bowl (The 'Families') will have the names of Graham Lunn and brother Derek inscribed thereon this year as they triumphed over Gary Morton and his dad Jimmy by 4 & 3.

Lastly we had the singles event for the Henry Ballantyne. Chris Richards fresh from his victory the day before could not match David Philip who carried his form forward to carve a 4 & 3 margin.

The J & B Championship Stableford was played in testing windy conditions on Saturday. This qualifying competition was won by Dave Todd (37pts), second was Graham Lunn (32pts) and third was David Philip (30pts).

Non qualifiers played in an individual stableford which was won by Junior Champion Jack Philip (32pts) with Alan Melrose (31pts) second and Martin Hargrave (28pts) third.

Members who are in possession of silverware are again reminded to hand them in (after suitable attention to polishing) as soon as possible so that engraving can be done for this year's presentation evening on Saturday, November 17. Tickets for this event, to be held in the Union Club, will shortly be on sale at the Clubhouse.
