IT was Ladies Day at West Linton Bowling Club on Sunday, June 14 and the gentlemen catered all day long for the 66 ladies who entered the competition.

There was breakfast, a delicious lunch with wine, and afternoon tea with some lovely home baking. They proved to be an excellent catering team and even found time to surprise Bill Armstrong of West Linton and Hazel Dodds of St Ronan’s with candle lit cupcakes for their birthdays.

Various clubs from all over were represented and included Biggar, Broughton, Carluke, Easthouses, Forth, Innerleithen, Peebles, Pennicuik, Walkerburn, West End (Edinburgh) and, of course, West Linton.

The teams of triples had to play five games of five ends. Unfortunately, it rained in the morning but that did not put a damper on the atmosphere, which was one of having fun and enjoying the day. The weather began to warm up in the afternoon and by the time the semi-finalist were announced the sun was shining. So it was Biggar against West Linton and Broughton against West End. Before the teams went outside, President, Charlie Smith thanked everyone involved in making it a very special day and the gentlemen were given a loud round of applause by the appreciative ladies. Charlie also thanked those who generously donated raffle prizes.

There was some really good bowling from all the ladies but it was West End and West Linton who made the finals. The West End ladies were Lily Hirst, Sheila Grigor and Pat Brown and the West Linton team were Cathy Bruce, Audrey Eland and June Smith.

And it was West Linton who won through to take the trophy, last won by the club over 15 years ago, so many congratulations to the ladies.
