MORE than 200 cyclists, aged from six to 70, took part in a rideout in memory of the former president of Peebles Cycling Club.

Carl Lane died, aged 75, in April - six months after sustaining spinal injuries when his bike was in collision with a car near his home in Eshiels.

He was an inspiration to the children from Peebles Cycling, the High School MTB club, Cranked and KICC. And it was the younger members of PCC who wanted to recognise his efforts by holding a tribute day at Glentress on Sunday.

“The whole event was the children’s idea - we adults just organised it all for them,” said Alison Caw, the chair of Peebles Cycling Club.

“I know Carl would have approved of it all - he loved his cooking and he would have certainly had to have a go at the sausage pie competition.” Three different groups gathered at Glentress before joining together and cycling a new section of trail named Carl’s Lane in his memory before it was used in last month’s Enduro World Series.

“We put up Tibetan flags along Carl’s Lane and when we got to the top one of the children read out a touching poem,” said Alison. “We all had a quiet or moment or two then before eventually making our way down to the bottom.” Carl’s family are not cyclists but his wife, two daughters and grandchildren were driven in a car by one of the club members so that they could view the event.

“After the rideout we all went to the wigwam field where we made a memory board for Carl. There was a barbecue and the sausage pie making competition,” said Alison.

“Carl would have loved it all - he would have regarded this as the perfect day.”
