LAST weekend was a busy one for Peebles Bowling Club. On Saturday the annual Gents Invitation Triples competition was held after a slight delay due to the weather, but the decision to play was borne out as sunshine took over from the rain, and the men from all over the Borders and further afield enjoyed a really good day’s bowling.

The beaten semi-finalists were from West Linton and Kirkhill Bowling Clubs, and the finalists were Gary Aitken, Billy Hogarth and Willie Melrose from Patthead and Dave Nelson, Terry Luscombe and Walter Mackay from Goldenacre (Edinburgh) bowling clubs.

It was the Edinburgh team who took the honours after a closely fought final.

On Sunday it was Peebles’ honour to host the County Gents Singles competition, with entries from all the clubs in Peeblesshire. This time play started out in glorious sunshine, with the rain coming just at the end of the day, but that didn’t dampen spirits, or affect play, which was of a particularly high standard. The semi finalists were Andrew Borthwick, Robert Crawford and Derek Pearce from St Ronans, and Keith Brown from Peebles. In the final both Andrew and Derek played excellent bowls, with Derek emerging as the winner.

Also the previous weekend saw local lady Dot Lavin, representing Kirkhill Bowling Club, winning the Midlothian Ladies Champion of Champions at Gilmerton Bowling, beating the Buccleuch Dalkeith champion in the final. Well done Dot.

Thanks to all who took part in the competitions, and congratulations to the winners.
