PEEBLES golfer Darren Howie enjoyed a memorable debut for Scotland as he helped his country to the Boys Home International title at Conwy in Wales – the nation’s first Home triumph since 2006.

Howie, the youngest player in the Scotland Boys team aged just 15, contributed four-and-a-half points out of a possible six, in matches against Wales, Ireland and England, with the young Scots winning all three matches to emerge top of the table.

Tied with the Auld Enemy going into the crucial final day, Scotland defeated their rivals by an impressive 9.5 – 5.5 margin to capture the trophy for the first time in nine years.

Howie partnered Scottish Boys stroke play champion Sandy Scott to a half in the morning foursomes, with the pair securing two wins and a half in an unbeaten week, before winning his singles match 2 and 1 against England’s Jamie Li.

A delighted Scotland team captain Scott Knowles said: “I’m speechless to be honest. It was an absolutely fantastic performance from the boys. We looked to be down and out at one stage in the foursomes but somehow turned it around to go in 2.5 – 2.5 at lunch.

“In the singles, the boys came out firing in one of the best performances at Boys level I’ve seen. The standard of golf was extremely high throughout all 10 matches. The entire team have been great all week, great team spirit and they all supported each other very well.” Darren’s brother Craig makes his Scotland men’s debut this week in the Men’s Home Internationals, which were taking place at Royal Portush in Northern Ireland.
