Walkerburn 32

Peebles 2nds 42

Colin McCudden at Caberston Haugh

AFTER Walkerburn's original opponents cancelled, some frantic activity resulted in the mouth watering fixture of a home game against Peebles 2s down at Caberston Haugh last Saturday.

A welcome return of the historic local derby and a step up in intensity for the Burn.

Peebles started well with tries from Jeffrey and Harrison sandwiching a penalty from Burn's Adam Williams.

The Burn came right back into the game when Freeman's grubber through was pounced upon by the electric Ryan Scott on the line.

Peebles replied with a score from Ruairidh Britton on his father's old stomping ground.

Burn were getting a lot of joy out wide and Chris 'Whitey' Stansfield grabbed himself an excellent try in the top corner outpacing the Peebles cover.

Peebles were 21-13 up at the interval, but everything was still to play for.

After a competitive first-half the second half didn't disappoint and the Burn team, growing in confidence, scored first after another midfield break from the elusive Ryan Scott.

The tit for tat battle continued with a long range try for Peebles' Ruairidh Clinch.

However they were pegged back when dynamic number 8 Jack McDonald ended a spell of pressure scoring in his favourite corner.

A turning point in the match came when Adam Williams' 50 yard penalty attempt to edge the Burn in front drifted narrowly wide.

The next passage of play ended in a try for Peebles' McConnell, with further pressure resulting in a try for Hogarth putting a bit of space between the teams.

The Burn fought back again with Del Zokas displaying both pace and power to bring the Burn back towards the end of the match, although it proved to be too late as time ran out on a match that was a pleasure for players and spectators alike.

This was an excellent afternoon's entertainment played in great spirit with both teams eager to play rugby.

Thanks go to Peebles for making the fixture happen.

Walkerburn's young side took another step in their development and look ahead to a trip to Dunbar this Saturday.
