Peebles 13 v 39 Stewarts Melville
SOME former Gytes favourites came back to haunt Peebles last Saturday.
Coach Bruce McNaughton, Donald Sangster and ex-captain Willie Aitken were instrumental in leaving the Pees pointless for the second consecutive match.
It was always going to be tough against the city side, but it became even harder for Gerry McGuinness' team when Hayden Lingard darted in at the corner for the opening try.
Peebles did respond with some encouraging play from the pack - but the possession and eventual territory advantage led to nothing.
Stuart Kerr slotted a penalty for the visitors to extend the lead on 18 minutes.
The Gytes men did enjoy a brief spell of pressure with Connor Blyth forcing the visiting defence into a penalty approaching the half hour. Neil Warnock made no mistake with the kick.
Despite the best efforts of the strong Stew pack, Peebles began to gain the upper hand.
And once again they were drawn into conceding a penalty as the pressure built. Warnock's second kick brought Peebles within two points at the break.
Unfortunately the momentum was lost during the break - and it was Stew Mel who drove the home pack backwards from the whistle. A few minutes later Joni Hare crashed over for his team's second try.
Kerr missed the conversion, as well as a penalty a few minutes later, to leave the visitors seven points in front.
Aitken and his pack were well on top - forcing errors and penalties from the Pees.
Euan Jackson was yellow carded and the visitors took full advantage with Reece Steel darting in for a try. Kerr's conversion gave Stew a 20 points to 6 advantage.
Further mistakes from the home team allowed Donald Sangster to stroll in for a further five points. Kerr converted before going in for his own try, which again he converted to extend his team's tally to 32 points.
The Gytes support needed something to lift their spirits - and it came with nine minutes remaining. Dale Clancy finished off a great move by the home team to touch down under the posts. Warnock's conversion brought the score to 13-32.
But Sangster rounded off a great day for his team by intercepting near the half way line and sprinting clear for the try. Kerr's kick brought the final score to 13-39.
