Last week’s Peeblesshire News highlighted shortage problems both on and off the pitch. And recently elected president, David Preacher, made a rallying cry for extra help to save the 131-year-old club.

On Sunday around 60 concerned locals gathered for an emergency meeting in the clubrooms.

Several new players put their names forward for the 2014/15 East League squad. And many more offered their services off the pitch.

Mr Preacher told us: “We would like to thank everyone for coming along - it was a very successful meeting.

“It is clear that nobody wants to see Walkerburn Rugby Club go and there is a lot of support to make sure we keep things going.

“We now have the nucleus of a good playing squad, committee and bar staff for the coming season.” Local businessman Robert Glendinning was appointed as Vice President during Sunday’s meeting. And Alan Brown, from Scottish Rugby Union, also offered his services during the talks.

Mr Preacher added: “Having Robert on board is great for Walkerburn. Mr Brown is going to help us with future plans and discuss ways of funding improvements to the club. I am sure everyone agrees - Walkerburn is now in a much healthier position.” The Caberston Haugh club has 16 signed players for the forthcoming season with several other informal offers. Pre-season training will start at the club on July 22 with an open invitation to anyone else interested in playing.
