But the coaches at the Gytes are determined that the squad will not be allowed to take it easy by giving them plenty of indoor tuition.

They want to ensure that the players will be properly prepared should the home game in BT National League One against Marr beat the weather. Kick-off is 3pm.

The heavy snow that fell in the west of the country last weekend caused the abandonment of the red and whites’ game against Hillhead-Jordanhill. This was frustrating for the club as the Glasgow side have lost all 15 of their league games this season and it was a game Peebles would have expected to win.

“We would have liked to have played the game last week,” said senior director of rugby Graeme Paterson. “They left it as long as they could but there was snow on the pitch and there was nothing that could be done.

“It’s not ideal, of course, but it has given some of the guys the chance to recover from niggles.” The sub-zero temperatures have made it difficult to hold any outdoor training this week but the players will still be ready should the forecast rise in temperatures allow the game to take place.

“It has been a struggle to find indoor facilities as so many clubs in the area are vying for them during this cold spell,” said Paterson.

“We have managed to get in some outdoor stuff - but there is plenty we have been able to do with them indoors.

“We have taken the opportunity to hold a video session and review with the players. This gives them plenty to think about.

“We have also done plenty of one-to-one training to see how we can help them develop their game.

“Obviously our number one way of coaching would be to do outdoor work but we have to accept that it just hasn’t been possible this week.” The pitch at the Gytes has been unplayable for most of the week but Paterson said: “It is supposed to get warmer on Friday, so there is a chance we will be able to play the game. In a perfect world we’d have undersoil heating and wouldn’t have to worry about it but that is very expensive to run.” Peebles were held to a draw by Marr when the sides met in Troon last October - and another tough test is on the cards.

“They did well last week with a draw against GHA and we are under no illusions about the task facing us,” said Paterson. “They are an aggressive side, good in set-pieces with plenty of good runners. They must be given the respect they deserve.” Apart from captain Callum Scott, who is still nursing a shoulder injury, the coaches should have a full squad at their disposal.

The abandoned game against Hillhead-Jordanhill is likely to be rescheduled for February 7 or 28.
