The club now has excellent prospects of finishing in the higher reaches of BT National League Division One after securing a win and a bonus point in an entertaining encounter against Marr last Saturday.

The victory was the second of the month for the Gytes side and has helped them wipe away the memory of a poor end to 2014 when they failed to register a victory throughout November and December.

It has set them up nicely for the end of season campaign which begins when they travel north to take on Dundee HFSP tomorrow.

“It was a good win for us last Saturday and the bonus point was a further confidence boost,” said senior director of rugby Graeme Paterson. “We can now look forward to the remainder of the season and try to get as high up that table as possible.

“Both sides played some good rugby on Saturday. We looked comfortable at one stage but they came back at us strongly and in the end they might have regarded themselves as a little unlucky.

“Things have turned round well for us - if we’d lost the Aberdeen game at the start of the month before our defeat to GHA we could well have been dragged into the relegation dogfight.

“It looks as if it will be a battle now between five teams down there and we have given ourselves a bit of breathing space.” Peebles are in fifth spot in the table with tomorrow’s rivals one place and two points behind but holding two games in hand. The two sides appear of similar ability so it should be a close encounter at Mayfield (kick-off 2pm).

“They are a good side but we beat them at Peebles. We played well that day and will need to be equally as good or better if we are to win again,” said Paterson. “But there is nothing to say we can’t go up there and get a result.” Dundee are returning to league action after a three-week break with the weather having put paid to their last two scheduled outings.

Paterson said: “It might favour us a little that we’ve managed to get in more games this month.

“The break for them will have allowed a few of their players to get over aches and strains but in terms of match fitness that might be something we can draw on.

“In a tight game the extra match practice we have might just give us an edge in the closing stages.” Nathan Mather will be an absentee tomorrow and is facing a long absence after tearing quad muscles during the Marr game but Cammy Pye, who had to leave the pitch with a neck injury, is expected to be available.

Paterson said: “We won’t be making many changes for the Dundee game as we have a pretty settled side now.” But he added: “It’s also good that we are able to name a strong bench - we were able to bring on Jonathan Swiatek and Graham Hogarth last week.” The club now has excellent prospects of finishing in the higher reaches of BT National League Division One after securing a win and a bonus point in an entertaining encounter against Marr last Saturday.
