PEEBLES Piranhas made a splash at the ProStrakan Mini Maroons Tournament in Galashiels on Sunday.

The P4 team - which included players from Peebles, Eshiels, West Linton and Innerleithen - defeated Melrose, 5-4, in the final to lift a trophy after overcoming Gala Gazelles, Selkirk, and Border Barbarians on the way.

The Pirnahas’ P5s narrowly missed out on a final place losing by a point to Melrose. Meanwhile, Melrose won the P3 and P5 age group, and Gala came out on top in the P6 & P7 age group.

Ian Millar, Gala Rugby Club’s development officer, said: “A big thank you is due to Andrew Mclean and ProStrakan for their continuing support of what has, according to visiting teams, become one of the biggest and best Mini Tournaments, not just in the Borders, but in Scotland. Win or lose it was still a great day down Netherdale way.” This weekend the Piranhas are hosting a touring team from Durham and Melrose in a round robin at Hay Lodge. There will be a barbecue and soft drinks to keep hungry players and parents going. Donations of the legendary Piranhas home baking are requested too.

Last Friday the P4-6 squad travelled to Murrayfield for the Edinburgh v Zebre game to take part in the guard of honour and a half time game with Duns. The kids (coaches and parents!) had a fan-tastic time.
