THE Tweeddale Sports Council gave out their awards last week to a packed audience in the Eastgate Theatre.

Olympic gold medallist Scott Brash became the first person to retain the Tweeddale Sports Personality of the Year award at the ceremony. With other big winners: SALSC Service to Local Sport - Sheila Horsburgh; Junior Sports Personality of the Year - Lucy Grant (mountainbiking); Coach of the Year - Lily Stenhouse (Badminton); Junior Coach of the Year - Calum Murray (Badminton); Team of the Year - Peebles Curling Club Senior Ladies Rink (Maggie Barry, Jean Hammond, Valerie Mahon, Barbara Watt).

The Tweeddale Sports Council presented 19 awards to local sports men and women in recognition of their national success. They are listed below.

Jacob Adkin - Mountain Running: A Moorfoor Runner, Jacob was invited to run for Scotland in May in the WMRA International Youth Cup in Ireland but was already committed to a School function, so made his first Scotland Representative appearance in the Home Countries Under 16s International, taking 6th place overall but as 1st Scot assisting the team to the silver medal.

Scout Adkin - Mountain Running/ Trial Running:Jacob's sister, also a Moorfoot Runner, continued her impressive racing career, with a Penrith Senior Scotland appearance days after her 19th birthday, 3rd Scot and 12th overall. Scout also added to her numerous Scottish Under 20s honours in the Keswick Karrimor International Trail Race, finishing 3rd overall and 1st Scot. Scout was also 1st Under 20s woman in the Scottish 10k Road Race Championships.

Scott Brash - Showjumping: Scott's continuing attainments have already been listed many times before- he continues to represent GB internationally all over the world. His Olympic Team Gold has been rightly widely celebrated, and of course along with his team-mate Nick Skelton he has reached the final round of the Individual Event and came tantalizingly close to that Gold Medal.

Paul Conkie - Master's Hockey: Following selection for and competing with Scottish Hockey International Over 40s Masters' Team since 2009 in Hong Kong, Utrecht in 2010, then that 2011 Over 45s in Northern Ireland and Germany (where the Scots were Runners- Up), Paul also featured in a Singapore Tournament in 2011. 2012 saw Paul playing for Scotland in the Home Nations Contest at Edinburgh Peffermill in June, followed by the August Masters World Cup at Canterbury. After a mixed start, Scotland recovered but missed a Semi- Final Place on goal difference. Paul is again in the Scotland Training Squad for this year's International Tournaments. Martin Cruikshank - Kabaddi: A try- scoring winger for the Promotion- winning Peebles RFC, Martin knew as little about Kabaddi last year as probably all of us did, until now anyway. A Strathclyde University Sports Initiative, Kabaddi is a popular Indian contact sport, with some features in common with Rugby, although very different from the Rugby we know. Glasgow Student Martin trained in the West and was selected for a Scottish Squad entered in the 2012 Kabaddi World Cup in Punjab, which attracted crowds of thousand. The inexperienced Scots did improve in each of their three group matches but did not manage a win so did not qualify to the final stages.

Curling - Maggie Barry, Jean Hammond, Valerie Mahon and Barbara Watt: The Peebles Curling Club Team of the year Members' 2012 achievement has been recognised and they won the Senior Ladies' Scottish Championships and qualified as a result to represent Scotland at the World Championships in Denmark, and even more, excelled further to finish Silver- Medal Winning Runners-Up.

Murray Davidson - Football: Innerleithen's Murray Davidson, now with St Johnstone F.C, won his 1st Scotland Cap in November, coming on as a late substitute in Scotlands 2-1 win the friendly match against Luxenbourg.

Lucy Grant - Mountainbiking: Lucy's achievements in 2012 include her 2012 selection for GB in August European Championships in Austria, where she was a very creditable 15th from a field of 65, then in the Autumn experiencing the London Hadley Farm Olympic course, where the Inter- Regional MB Championships were held, Lucy helping Scotland South to 3rd place overall.

Craig Howie - Golf: 2012 was a fine year for Craig: in April he became the first Borders Club Member to win the Scottish Boys' Championship, which took him into the Scottish Team for the European Boys' Tournament in Stockholm. Another European event in Kent in June found Craig finishing with a 65 which helped him become the winner.

In Ireland for the August Home Countries' International Craig helped the Scots to 2nd place. Last November Craig was selected for the new Men's Transitional Squad.

Isobel Knox - Ultra- Running: Ultra- Running of course begins where marathons finish. Innerleithen's Isobel Knox became Scottish 100k Champion as 1st Scot and 4th overall and was 1st Scot in Wales in the August Anglo- Celtic Cup, helping Scottish Woman to a Team Bronze medal.

In October Isobel was 1st woman home in the Jedburgh Three Peaks Ultra, proceeds from which went to the Margaret Kerr Fund. Isobel's 2012 rounded off in Spain with selection for the Women's 12- Hour Race in the Barcelona Running Festival, when, completing just over 71 miles, she was first woman and 2nd overall.

Sarah McCormack - Mountain Running/Trail Running/ Cross Country: Moorfoot Runner Sarah continues to confirm her versatility and improve her performances. In the European MR Championships in Turkey (an up and down race) she was 8th after a 42nd in 2011. In the World MR Championships (an uphill event) Sarah was 15th after 37th place in 2011. To be involved at all at this level is of course a significant feat.

In the Keswick Karrimor International Trail race between the Home Countries and Ireland, Sarah was 2nd overall, while on the track she was Scottish 5000m Champion and on the Road Scottish 10k Champion. Last but by no means least, although below her best and disappointed with her own 36th place finish, Sarah was a member of the Gold- Medal Winning Ireland Team at the European Cross- Country Championships.

Calum McGowan - Mountainbiking: After winning the Aberfoyle National Youth Section Championships in march and the National Cross Country Second Round at Yorshire's Dalby Forest in April, and ranked 1st Under 16s Scot and 3rd in Britain, Calum was selected for the British Team in the European Youth Championships in Austria in August.

In October Calum was invited to join the British Cycling Talent Team, an ongoing training and development scheme.

Faye Nicholson - Long Jump and Triple Jump:Faye consolidated her place as top- ranking Under 20 age group Scot in both Long Jump and Triple Jump in January last year in an Under 20 Indoor Celtic Cup International but suffered a shoulder dislocation, requiring long physical and mental rehabilitation. Seven months later, her 19th birthday was celebrated in style when Faye won both jumps at the Under 20 Scottish Championships, leading to another National Pre- Olympic warm- up selection in Wales at Under 20, when Faye won Silver in the Long Jump, missing the Gold by the merest fraction. Jo Pettitt - Netball: Our 2011 Junior Sports Personality continues her fine sports career, with regular and impressive match play highlighted by selection for the Scotland Under 17 team in the European Championships, when the team achieved their best results for several years. Jo also trains and plays with the Under 21s and Senior Squads, preparing for this August World Youth Championships and next years Commonwealth Games.

Susan Ridley - Cross Country/ Hill Running: Susan continued her impressive Masters Class competing last year, with World Championship 2nd places in the Cross Country and the 3000m Indoor Event, then coming 4th in the World Masters 1500m Indoor Championships. Susan was 2nd in the July European Masters Mountaineering Championships at Bluedenz, and won the British Half- Marathon in October.

Throughout the year Susan maintained her remarkable Scottish Senior and Masters 1500m, 3000m and Cross Country performances, recording, no fewer than nine individual and team 1st placings. Always a fine competitive Ambassdor for Scotland and Great Britain, Susan's official selections for Scotland were at Home Countries Hill Running International for Scotland in September (14th place) and the British and Irish Masters Cross Country International in November when she was 3rd in her group and helped the Scottish Team to 3rd place.

Naomi Symonds - Volleyball: In April last year Naomi played in the European Junior Championships in Cyprus, where the Scottish Team, who had qualified in Malta in January, won an unexpected Silver Medal, and Naomi was awarded the Best Blocker Award, well ahead of the Runner- Up. Still only 17, Naomi is now a Member of the Scottish Senior Squad, with whom she was selected to train later in 2012.
