MAKING a very welcome return to Clydesdale Folk Club for their Christmas concert is the amazing Newcastle fiddler, Tom McConville.

This time Tom brings a new guitarist, Andy Watt. Those who previously came to see Tom with David Newey will recall an outstanding night’s entertainment and musicianship, with Tom’s warmth and rapport with the audience shining through.

Their interpretation of a variety of traditional fiddle tunes from all over Britain and contemporary songs such as Richard Thompson’s “ Beeswing” and Mark Knopfler’s “Why Aye, Man” was memorable.

Renowned for his musical accompaniments, Tom has played on literally hundreds of albums. The list includes: Barbara Dickson, Richard Thompson, Allan Taylor and Lindisfarne. Tom began his career in the ever-vibrant folk scene of Tyneside. He has supported many other top names including The Fureys, De Dannan, Boys of the Lough, Paul Brady, The Chieftains and many more.

In 2009 Tom won the coveted 'Musician of The Year’ at the BBC Folk awards. A panel of 170 broadcasters, folk journalists, festival organisers, agents, promoters etc recognised Tom’s then 36 year contribution to the folk scene. The respect of his peers and influence on the younger generation of folk musicians was celebrated at a glittering ceremony in London.

The concert will be at the Corn Exchange in Biggar tonight (Friday, December 19) at 8pm. Tickets priced £10 (£8 for members £2 for school age) are available by contacting George Simpson on 01555 811641.
