A LOCAL artist has produced an original artwork which will become a huge mural that will transform a part of a Borders town.

Michael Jessing’s work will turn the blank gable end of the bake house in Pennel’s Courtyard, Peebles, into a colourful pageant of the town’s history, a wall of colour featuring historic Peebles characters from King David to a family on the High Street today.

An afternoon talk at the end of January, is an opportunity to meet Michael, share his enthusiasm and understand the inspiration for the Peebles Mural.

He will explain the process of producing this artwork which was commissioned by Peebles Creative Place 2014. Fundraising continues to prepare the site and translate the image from paper into a permanent outdoor artwork.

In 40 years as an artist, New York born Michael has used his art to express his responses to personal and social issues, creating poetic visual narratives, journeys within a figurative format. He is influenced by artists such as William Blake, Goya, Stanley Spencer, and Botticelli.

In 2007 Michael painted three large gilded murals of A Procession of Angels for St Peter’s Church in Peebles and, more recently, he has completed a 28 feet long outdoor mural celebrating the Labour Movement in Prestonpans. His illustrations to the complete Book of Psalms have been exhibited widely including in York Minster Library, Chichester Cathedral, Wells Cathedral and Carlisle Cathedral.

Discuss the Peebles Mural with Michael on Saturday, January 31 at 2pm in the Anne Younger Studio, Eastgate Theatre, Peebles. Please book your ticket on 01721 725777 or in person at box office. Entry is by donation, which will be added to project funds.
