INTERNATIONALLY renowned pianist Philip Fowke will introduce The Art of the Encore next month to Peebles.

Featuring music associated with some of the great pianists of the past, Philip will talk about the works and share his personal association both with them and with the pianists who played them.

The concert is the third in the Music In Peebles season for 2017/18.

Philip is a well-loved teacher, lecturer and commentator of music whether in the Royal Academy, or on Radio 3, or at the Leeds Piano Competition.

Now recognised as a champion of British music, performing the concertos of Arnell, Britten, Bliss, Delius, Finzi, Ireland, King, Leighton, Rawsthorne, Tippett and Walton, he regularly gives master-classes worldwide and adjudicates at international competitions.

His repertoire is diverse – from bringing out the best in film music to the intimacy of the chamber music genre.

The late Ronald Stevenson, our local composer who lived in West Linton, was a well- respected authority on Busoni.

And Philip will pay tribute to both men’s talents in his programme.

Lyndal bale from Music in Peebles added: "Philip Fowke is one of Britain’s most distinguished musicians.

"His appearances with leading orchestras together with his many broadcasts and recordings have earned him international respect, admiration and the affection of audiences.

"This concert will be a real treat."

As part of The Art of the Encore Philip will play Schumann's Sonata No.3 in F minor, Op.14 (3rd mov’t), Liszt's Années de pèlerinage: Deuxième Année ('Italie'), S.161, Stevenson's Peter Grimes Fantasy and Busoni's Kammer-Fantasie über Bizets Carmen.
