SCOTLAND’S only destination spa has added some extra sparkle to Peebles Fireworks Display.

Stobo Castle is sponsoring this year’s event which is organised by Peebles Round Table and relies on public donations to survive.

It had been feared that a drop in membership may have forced the annual event to be cancelled.

But Stobo, who have announced they will sponsor the event for the next three years, have stepped in with a £10,000 funding boost to ensure the fireworks display goes off with a bang.

Round Table chairman Mark Pyman said: “Stobo’s support has tripled the funds available for buying the fireworks and will guarantee the biggest most intense show Peebles has ever seen.

“In addition we have replaced the display controls with a state of the art system which is future proof, our old equipment was coming to the end of its life.” This year’s Peebles Fireworks Display will be held in the town’s Victoria Park on Saturday, November 8. The bonfire will be lit at 7pm and the fireworks will follow at 7.30pm.

Entry is by voluntary donation with all proceeds going towards local groups and charities.

Mark added: “We hope that next Saturday the generous people of Peebles will really enjoy the night and that we can raise a record amount of money for local groups and charities.” The charities set to benefit include the 1st Peebles Guides; 2nd Peebles Guides; Peebles Scouts; Leithen Vale Sports Club; Peebles High School Rugby Club; Peebles High School Hockey Club; Cardrona Scouts; Peebles Development Band; KICC - Kids Innerleithen Cycle Club; Peebles Judo Club; Peebles Football Club; Eddleston Out of School Club; Peebles Cycling Club and Cranked KCC Stobo Castle Marketing Director Jenni Watts said: “Stobo Castle are delighted to sponsor Peebles Fireworks for the very first time this year promising an even bigger and better event than ever before.

“With the extra funds provided by Stobo, along with proceeds from the Peebles & District Round Table fundraising, November 8 will see a longer and more intense display to entertain the people of Peebles and beyond.

“The Round Table charities are a good fit with our plans. We are concentrating on local good causes this year. Tablers work really hard at raising money, hopefully we can also help with publicity and raising the profile of the event on social media.

“It is not a one off for 2014 and Stobo has guaranteed support for the next three years, so that the money which the Round Table would have spent on fireworks will allow them to give extra to the good causes.” The fire wood for the bonfire is being supplied by Glenrath Farms and the organisers have appealed to local residents not to add to it.

Forty-five-year-old civil engineer Richard Harlow is in charge of this year’s display.

He is one of just five members of Peebles Round Table, supported by eight honorary members.

And the local organsiation, which organises a number of social events throughout the year, has invited more men, aged 18 to 45, to get involved.

Mr Pyman said: “Anyone who would like to come along and see what we get up to is more than welcome to come along to our next meeting which is being held at The County Inn, Peebles High Street, on Tuesday, November 4, at 7.30pm. We have socials most months such as comedy nights in Edinburgh or karting in November for example, with the highlight of our social calendar being the Chairman’s trip, which this year will be to Barcelona in February 2015.

“It’s not all work and we thoroughly enjoy what we do for the community and ensure it’s fun at the same time.” For further information call Mr Pyman on 07598986635 or email: chairman@peeblesroundtable.co.uk
