PEEBLES High School has become just the second school in Scotland to scoop a national award for diabetes care.
Caroline Connor, who works in the school office as well as being the main first aider, was nominated for the Diabetes UK Care in Schools Award by Angela Archibald, a Paediatric Diabetes Nurse at BGH.
Over the last eight years she has worked to support pupils with all aspects of diabetes care – from making sure they carry out regular testing throughout the day, to giving support when they are feeling unwell.
Campbell Wilson, Rector at Peebles High said he was “absolutely delighted” that Caroline and the school had been recognised nationally, and praised the pupils for “working hard at dealing with the condition”.
And parent Sandra Pincott added: "Caroline is an absolute asset to Peebles High School. I have had two children through the High School who are both Type 1.
"My son in particular was a challenge, and Caroline worked relentlessly with him to support and manage his diabetes within a school environment. "Every school should have a Caroline!"
The award was presented by Rupert Pigott from Diabetes UK and was attended by pupils, parents, health care workers; in addition to Deputy Manager, Caroline Raeburn from Peebles Hydro, who is supporting Caroline in her training to swim the length of Loch Lomond in July next year, in order to raise funds and the awareness of Diabetes in Scotland.
Anyone wishing to sponsor Caroline in her bid to cover the 36km of Loch Lomond should contact her at peebleshs@scotborders.gov.uk
