VILLAGERS in and around Carlops turned back time at the weekend to recreate the annual Athletic Games and Sports.

Inaugurated in 1852, the annual village competitions became a popular date on the 19th century calendar.

The revival is part of the Allan Ramsay Hotel's 225 year anniversary.

And it is hoped the village fete will yet again become an annual event.

Dozens of children and adults competed throughout Sunday afternoon at the Rock Field.

Glorious sunshine and freshly-made picnics provided the perfect accompaniment for a day of sporting rivalry and fun.

As well as age-group foot, sack, ege-and-spoon and three-legged races, there was a high-jump and long-jump competition.

Carlops and Kitleyknowe residents squared up to their neighbours from Silverburn and Ninemileburn for a gruelling tug-of-war on the village green.

And original village quoits were revived for the afternoon with heaving-the-sack competition also being brought back.

During the fete there was a pet show with various classes, which were judged by Jean Hunter, in the Village Hall.

And the skirlie cooking competition proved to be highly competitive.

The monthly Carlops Market was held to coincide with the fete.

And throughout much of the day there was live music and fine fare served up in the historic hotel.

Carlops Athletic Games and Sports.was organised by Guy and Hannah Walters, Rosemary Brown, Kenny Hall, Jim Eccleston, Anna Wolverton, Stuart and Catriona Delves, Gary and Rachel Hughes, Aonghas MacNeacail, Kat Raspin, Marty Lee, Gerda Stevenson and Dean Woodhouse.
