A PEEBLES High pupil who saved her mum’s life has become the first recipient of the school’s Head Teacher’s Award.

Kirsty Hall received the award – which recognises young people who have done something outstanding at school, home or in the community – for helping her diabetic mum Kim, who had slipped into a coma.

The school explained: “Just before Kirsty left for school one morning she shouted ‘bye mum’ but she didn’t hear a reply.

“Kirsty popped back upstairs to investigate and realised that something wasn’t right. Kim was not responding and she couldn’t wake her up.

“Kirsty phoned her dad on his mobile immediately and he gave Kirsty instructions over the phone on what she had to do. This involved having to take the Emergency Glucagon Injection from the medical cupboard and inject her mum straight away – something Kirsty had never had to do before, even though her dad Robert has talked the procedure through with Kirsty many times before.

“Thankfully, her mum started to come round almost immediately and Robert arrived home not long afterwards to take over.

“Kirsty only missed her first lesson at school that day and was still a little overcome by what had happened, but a chat with her pastoral teacher, Lianne Jackson, reassured her that she had acted in a very calm and mature way and effectively she had saved the life of her mum.

“Kirsty has repeated this situation again more recently. This time she took control all by herself and once again managed to successfully bring her mum round.

“Once her dad and granny arrived home Kirsty headed off to school phoning the school office to explain why she was running late with the best ‘excuse’ ever …. I’ve just saved my mum’s life! Kirsty is a mini super hero.”
