MEDIEVAL history was colourfully brought to life at Traquair over the weekend.

Record numbers of spectators enjoyed jousting, battle re-enactments, period fashion shows, craft- and weapon-making, jesters, storytellers and falconry.

And close to half a million viewers were also brought the delights of the ancient battlefields by This Morning presenter Alison Hammond.

A special feature on Traquair's Medieval Fayre was broadcast during the popular ITV show on Monday.

But the lucky ones were the 3,000 visitors who witnessed the days of yore in person on the historic estate outside Innerleithen.

Throughout the Saturday and the Sunday they were treated to epic duels on the jousting arena, the clash of swords as armies squared up on the lawns, and the boom of cannon- and musket-fire.

Jesters and musicians lightened the mood, while tucked away in the Walled Garden a Medieval encampment brought to life the fashions, foods and crafts of the pre-renaissance centuries.

A fully working medieval forge provided plenty of heat while an alchemist provided the magic.

Organiser Catherine Maxwell Stuart told us: "This was probably the most successful Fayre to date and everything looked beautiful under blue skies.

"The event has expanded in recent years with nearly 100 re-enactors taking part which has made the battles and displays even more spectacular.

"With everyone saying they had a brilliant weekend we hope to continue to grow the event next year.” Ends

While it was mainly adults who donned the armour and took to the Traquair battlefield, the younger generation weren't forgotten.

As well as plenty of period games and workshops for the children, as well as archery and sword-making, one of the highlights of the weekend was the Children's Army as they, armed with foam swords, went to battle against the knights in a fitting finale to a magical weekend.
