POLICE are to clamp down on motorists who flout parking rules on a busy Peebles road.

At last week’s meeting of Peebles Community Council, PC Diane Sorrell confirmed that officers were aware of the parking issues on Rosetta Road in recent weeks.

These include cars being left parked on pavements, and obstructing safe crossing areas.

PC Sorrell said: “I am aware of the issues on Rosetta Road, which were highlighted in the Peeblesshire News earlier this summer.

“There are plans for a few strategies to deal with it, including proposed signage, and ‘Don’t park on the pavement’ cards to be placed on the windscreens of cars.

“The plans to tackle this will be looked at when the schools go back this month.”

One Peebles resident told the meeting: “In the last three years, the problem has got worse on and around Rosetta Road, and I’ve noticed a couple of very near misses.

“What would happen if fire engines needed to get down the road? The cars would have to be forced out of the way.”

PC Sorrell asked the resident if the near-miss incidents had been reported. He replied: “The problems have been reported, but officers haven’t been out to see me.”

The Peeblesshire News reported in June that a Peebles mum had hit out at ‘inconsiderate’ school-run drivers after several near misses from those not slowing down or stopping to let parents and children cross the road.

The mum also criticised motorists who parked on the pavement outside Rosetta Road stores.

Scottish Borders Council told us: “We would appeal to parents driving their children to school to please do so considerately or consider if it is possible to get to school via active travel such as walking, cycling, scooter or park and stride.”
