MELROSE isn’t just the best place to live in Scotland.

It is also the most honest, according to two Australian tourists.

The couple from Down Under were sampling the historical delights of the town recently.

But Afton Johnston and her husband’s dream trip turned into a nightmare when they left their camera, full of holiday memories, in Market Square.

The couple had driven almost 70 miles north before realising.

But, thanks to staff at a Melrose cafe, the Melbourne pair can enjoy leafing through their snaps once again.

Afton told the Border Telegraph: “We discovered later that I had left my camera on a seat in the square.

“After leaving the square I went shopping in Boots the chemist. And from Melrose we drove to Falkirk, where I discovered my camera containing a month’s holiday photos was missing.

“At the Falkirk Wheel Visitor Centre they made some calls for me. The chemist suggested that we ring the cafe in front of the seat. They rang Rhymers Fayre and the gentleman there went out into the street to check.

“My camera was still on the seat after two hours, we drove to Melrose and collected it. Thank you to the helpful Melrose folk.”

The town was named the best place to live in Scotland, by the Sunday Times back in March.
