PLANS to save the People's Palace from closure are underway, according to national reports.

Glasgow City Council is understood to be working on a bid to ensure the Winter Gardens closure at the end of the year does not impact the museum itself.

Health and social care convenor Mhairi Hunter reportedly told her Twitter followers a report found glass and the structure of the gardens, which are used as a fire exit for the People's Palace, need to be replaced.

According to the BBC, she said: "What we do know is that council officers are currently working on a plan to create a new fire exit in the People's Palace so that it can remain open."

As exclusively reported by the Evening Times last week, work to make the gardens safe is expected to cost around £5million.

However, options to ensure the museum can remain open are expected to be presented to councillors within weeks.

It's understood the iconic building could close for a short period while work is carried out on the gardens, which are expected to close indefinitely.
