A HAND sewer from Innerleithen who drove while more than four times the legal alcohol limit after attending a funeral wake has been banned from the road for 18 months at Selkirk Sheriff Court.

Anna Lindsay, 58, of Plora Terrace, pleaded guilty to the offence which happened in Innerleithen's St Ronan's Road on the evening of September 26.

Procurator fiscal Graham Fraser explained how Lindasy's vehicle was in collision with another car at around 6.15pm.

He said: "The driver got out of the other vehicle and went over to the accused's car where she was slumped over the gear stick area.

"The other driver banged on the window and the accused got out but was unsteady on her feet.

"The other driver took the keys out of the ignition as she tried to get out of the vehicle."

The court heard that Lindsay left the scene but was quickly traced by police at her home.

She was found to be more than four times the legal alcohol limit when breathalysed and told police she had drank one third of a bottle of whisky before driving.

Lindsay admitted driving with a breath/alcohol count of 91 microgrammes - the legal limit being 22.

Defence lawyer Ed Hulme said: "She had been at the funeral of her best friend's mother and there were lots of people at the wake after.

"She is absolutely appalled at her own actions. She knows there is no excuse."

In addition to the driving ban, Lindsay was fined £225.
