As children pop the door to their chocolate filled advent calendars, counting down how many sleeps before Santa slides down the chimney, or uses his magic key, the anticipation brings much excitement.

But for some families the magic is dispelled by worry and anxiety, with many struggling to make ends meet, let alone splash out on lavish gifts.

However, a project aimed at supporting youngsters in Peeblesshire, has been busy bringing festive joy to those in need by gifting Christmas hampers packed to the bring with indulgent treats and a variety of yuletide essentials, including food and toiletries.

Peeblesshire Youth Trust has captured the true meaning of Christmas spirit, with this community-giving tradition that has been running for the last decade thanks to lead volunteer, Grace Mitchell.

“Whilst Christmas brings excitement in many household, it can lead to extra worry and anxiety for some,” explained PYT Programme Manager Sarah Keen. “The Christmas hampers initiative aims to ease some of those worries for local families.”

Last year saw a record number of hampers being delivered to families across Tweeddale, and Christmas 2018 will be no different.

Sarah says that the demand for hampers will be fulfilled this year thanks to the generosity of local businesses, churches, schools, organisations and individual volunteers.

And every little helps, as shoppers at Tesco popping their blue tokens into the Bags for Life slot supporting the organisation’s kind-hearted initiative, ensured a cracking boost of £4,000 towards the wicker-filled festive treats for families.

Sarah added: “This will further help to ensure peace of mind for many families over the festive period”

Local organisations such as Peeblesshire Foodbank, The Rotary Club of Peebles, local Scout groups and many others collect items for the hampers throughout November and December; this culminates in one big day of sorting, packing and delivering the hampers in the run up to Christmas, involving an army of willing local volunteers.

And after helping needy families in the community, youngsters from PYT enjoyed a Barista experience at Costa last Sunday.

Sarah said: “They were making their own delicious ‘Coolers’ behind the counter, with a little assistance from the fabulous Costa staff. Whilst sipping their concoctions, Christmas crafts were made, games were played and lots of chatter and laughter could be heard, it certainly was an enjoyable evening.

“PYT would like to thank Costa Coffee and their staff for staying late to provide such an experience for the young people, especially Kayleigh, Kieran and Camy for their help and patience behind the counter.”
