POLITICAL pressure is growing for major improvements at a dangerous junction on the edge of Peeblesshire.

Tweeddale MP David Mundell is backing calls for a roundabout to be introduced at Leadburn junction.

And he is being supported by local MSP Christine Grahame.

The convergence of A701, A703 and A6094 between Peebles and Penicuik has been the site of several fatal crashes and many other serious accidents over the years.

And drivers continue to report near misses around the junctions.

With Conservative councillors controlling much of the power in both Midlothian Council and Scottish Borders Council, Mr Mundell hopes progress can be made.

He said: "Whilst there have been recorded accidents over the years, there are also many anecdotal accounts of near misses, which are, of course, not included in statistics used for prioritising roads spending.

"Although the junction is just outside my constituency, I've been happy to raise the issue with the appropriate authorities because of concerns raised with me by many road-users I represent.

"The lack of progress so far has been frustrating but I'm a great believer that in politics perseverance over a long period can be necessary to find solutions to challenging problems.

"That's why I'm giving my full backing to Conservative councillors in both Midlothian and Scottish Borders councils who will be campaigning for improvements at the junction."

Just over 13 years ago the historic Leadburn Inn was totally destroyed in a fatal crash.

And campaigning has continued following further accidents as well as continued near misses.

Local MSP Christine Grahame has welcomed the support of Mr Mundell, but wants more than just words.

She said: "The Leadburn Junction has been a source of safety concern for local residents for many years. I’d welcome any action to improve it, but ultimately this falls at the feet of Midlothian Council.

“Mr Mundell’s support is welcome, but as his Tory colleagues share the balance of power in Midlothian Council I, and indeed local residents, will want to see these words backed up by real action to improve the junction.
