FANCY a play and a pint down the pub?

Thought so... well look no further.

The Borders Pub Theatre is set to launch next month in Selkirk before going on a creative crawl around other hostelries.

Often light, sometimes bitter, occasionally heavy but rarely mild, these short plays are the perfect accompaniment for an evening down the pub.

Borders Pub Theatre is an exciting new venture to promote and encourage new writing in the region.

And at the In the Beginning launch there will be the opportunity to sample the likes of Thomas Clark, Jules Horne and Robert Sproul-Cran as well as crisps and roasted peanuts.

Jules Horne, who is an Associate Playwright of Playwrights’ Studio Scotland, believes audiences are in for a treat.

She said: “I have worked with this group of writers for the past two years and I am excited to be part of this new initiative.

"Creating a space to bring playwrights and audiences together to see new work in creation feels very special."

Inspired by the hugely successful Village Pub Theatre in Leith, the Borders Pub Theatre will launch with the event at The County Hotel on Saturday, March 23.

Audiences will be treated to an evening of new writing inspired by the very apt theme In the Beginning.

The wildly different interpretations will be directed by Caitlin Skinner, founder of Village Pub Theatre, along with local director Clare Prenton.

And they will all be performed by professional actors based in the Scottish Borders.

A total of eight plays will be staged on the evening, ranging from Anita John's Stop Procrastinating, L J McIntyre's Butcher Play, and It's Pronounced Stow by Campbell Hutcheson, to Mozart and Salieri from Thomas Clark, Secretly Edgy by Jules, and Emily Larner's Form 4a Section Nothing.

Susan Garnsworthy, from Creative Communities at Live Borders added: “Live Borders is really pleased that the Scottish Borders writers who have benefited from Playwrights’ Studio’s Scottish Borders Playwriting Programme over the previous two years, will be able to have their work performed at the Borders Pub Theatre in Selkirk in March."

Doors open at 7pm and the event starts at 7.30pm.

Tickets, priced at only £3, and available on the door.
