A YOUNG Peebles chef is getting used to seconds.

Maisie McKenzie's kitchen skills earned her the runners-up place earlier this year at the East of Scotland Rotary Young Chef of the Year competition.

With only the winner of the regional competition going through to the national final, it should have been back to the recipe books for Maisie.

But the youngster was given only two-days' notice last month that the East winner was ill and couldn't go to the Scottish and North of England cook-off.

With competitors from Newcastle to Fort William and from Kirkcudbright to Pitlochry, the final was hot.

But yet again Maisie produced delicious dishes to earn runner-up.

Although it's only the winner of the Scotland and North of England final that goes into the UK-wide final in Leeds next month, perhaps Maisie shouldn't fold away her apron just yet.
