VANDALS who repeatedly destroy public toilets in Peebles have tampered with the newly installed CCTV camera.

But police say there are some “very clear images” of the culprits and they are working very hard to tackle the mindless vandalism on School Brae.

The constant attacks on the School Brae toilets have led to fears that they will be closed permanently.

And in a bid to catch the vandals in action, a camera was recently erected in the enclosed area, but it was spied by youths who moved it.

PC Dianne Sorrell said: “We’ve had the Community Action Team come up and join us and we’ve had extra officers come as well.

"We have been taking action. We won’t tolerate these behaviours.”

Chairman of Peebles Community Council, Lawrie Hayworth asked if the anti-social behaviour had gone down following the positioning of the mobile CCTV camera.

PC Sorrell replied: “The youths are still congregating in that area.

"I wouldn’t say that the cameras having gone up have stopped some of the issues because we are still receiving reports.

“Unfortunately during one of the incidents someone decided to move it so it was no longer able to record but it does provide very clear images and inquiries are still on-going.”
