A STARK warning has been issued to Scottish Borders Council not to build permanent safety measures on a dangerous road in Peebles without running it past the community.

Two temporary build-outs were placed on Rosetta Road last year following a campaign by concerned parents who raised fears about their children crossing.

But during the trial, owners of the Premier Shop asked for the build-out to be removed from next to their shop premises.

Peebles Community Council has learned that the two-sided build-outs worked really well for families.

He added: “We have had strong feedback that, unless there are very good reasons, the people taking their children to school would prefer the both sides build-out option. There has been some resistance to this option from the shop owners, I don’t know if they have documented some impact on the over the counter sales.

“We have had communication from the council officer to say that it has been noted what the public has said through the community council.”

Mr Hayworth said he would like officers to submit to the community the proposals before they are “set in stone”.

He continued: “That is one of the clear requests that we would like our elected members to take back to the roads department and officers. Do not proceed to get a contract to go and build something without running it by us again, so that we have the opportunity to express our views on the solution that you feel that you propose to adopt.

“So could we have a councillor put their hand up and say the community council is very clear do not place a contract to build anything, until you have run past the community what your proposals are and the justification for them and the justification for suggesting alternates.”
