A RARE headdress from the the Kainaiwa tribe of the Blackfoot nation has gone on display in Peebles.

The eagle feather headdress along with accompanying cape and gloves were gifts offered by Chief Shot on Both Sides to famed author John Buchan.

Buchan was Governor General of Canada from 1935 until his death in 1940.

During that time, as he travelled throughout the country, he made firm friendships with the First Nation people.

The headdress, cape and gloves were presented by Chief Shot on Both Sides in Saskatchewan during 1936.

And they have now arrived in Peebles to feature at the John Buchan Story Museum when it reopens for the season on Monday (April 1).

Ian Buckingham from the Museum told us: "After John's death, these elaborate pieces found their way to members of the Buchan family and to a museum in Bournemouth.

"After painstaking restoration work, the loan of these pieces will be a highlight of the John Buchan Story Museum this coming season."

The Peebles museum will also feature a new exhibition featuring the royal tour of Canada in 1939 by King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth.

Ian added: "This was an important visit just prior to the outbreak of the Second World War which helped to cement public opinion firmly behind the stance against Hitler."

Since relocating from Broughton to the Chambers Institution the John Buchan Story Museum has become a major attraction in Peebles.

And to draw even more visitors to view the extensive collection on the life of John Buchan, the normal entrance fee has been wavered.

The John Buchan Story Museum opens for the season on Monday, April 1.

It is open from Monday to Saturday between 10am and 4.30pm.
