EMERGENCY services are en route to a Peebles petrol station after a lorry crashed into the roof.

The incident happened this morning at the Esso Garage on the A72 Edinburgh Road.

The Peeblesshire News received a call from tourists who were at the scene when the articulated lorry embedded itself in the roof.

When our reporter arrived at the scene, manager Christine Murray was on the phone alerting police.

Customer service assistant Ben Allison told us: “We couldn’t believe our eyes.

“It shook the whole shop, it felt like an earthquake.

After reporting the incident, Christine said no-one was injured but staff were all still in shock.

She said: “We just heard this massive band and felt the vibrations - it was unbelievable.”

Staff at the petrol station believe the driver of the truck, which bears the livery of Dutch logistics company Verhoek, misjudged the height of the roofline.
