WANT to escape into a magical world of music?

Then Peebles Orchestra’s annual Spring concert will hit the right note.

Kingsland Primary School will host the fairytale evening with The Golden Spinning Wheel, a striking symphonic poem by Czech composer Antonin Dvorak.

And featuring a virtuosic work for solo violin and orchestra, Edouard Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole.

Beginning with The Golden Spinning Wheel the orchestra tells the story of a king, a beautiful girl, her wicked stepmother and an enchanted spinning wheel.

Dvorak’s symphonic poem tells the somewhat gruesome tale with authenticity to allow the audience to hear the story unfold with each new musical idea.

Dvorak wrote this piece towards the end of his life, after all his great symphonies, and it includes some of his most lyrical and descriptive writing.

Sarah Chapman from the orchestra told us: “The exciting and varied programme will [also] feature the Symphonie Espagnole by Lalo which is filled with stirring Spanish-inspired rhythms and melodies.

“When the famous Russian composer Tchaikovsky heard it, he was so enthralled that he was inspired to write his own violin concerto.

“The audience will have their own chance to be enthralled as they hear it played by virtuoso violinist Mark Wilson, who has both performed and conducted internationally”.

Sarah added: “The evening will be exciting not only for the audience but also for the orchestra itself.

“They feature many instruments covering a wide range of pitch, from the tiny piccolo to the enormous tuba and contra bassoon.

“And with three trombones joining four French horns in the mix, Kingsland School will reverberate with sound!”

Peebles Orchestra is made up of committed amateurs who always welcome interest from prospective local players.
