PART of the A702 will be closed overnight later this month.

Improvement work is carried out on Biggar High Street from Saturday, May 18 until Monday, May 20 from 6pm until 6am.

And there will be further closures from 8pm until 6am until Thursday, May 23.

The work, which is costing £190,000, is being carried out to improve laybys, parking bays and create better drainage.

A spokesperson for Amey, responsible for trunk roads in Scotland, said: "The scheme requires a full closure of the A702 carriageway between Gasworks Road and Broughton Road, Biggar with a signed diversion route in operation.

"Northbound traffic will be directed to leave the A702 at Maidencoats Roundabout to join the A73, via Symington to Hyndford Bridge.

"At Hyndford Bridge traffic will join the A70 past Carstairs to the Carnwath Roundabout. From here vehicles will join the A721 to re-join the A702 at Melbourne Crossroads.

"Southbound traffic will follow the same diversion in the opposite direction.

"Parking suspension notices will be in place from Wednesday, May 15 on Biggar High Street from Broughton Road to Station Road, while this work is taking place.

"This will also apply to all car parks within the town centre, adjacent to the A702.

"Please be aware there will be some noise disruption related to this scheme as we apologise in advance for any inconvenience.

"There is a small risk of vibration damage so, as a precautionary measure, we would ask businesses or properties to ensure any items are secured."

Weekly bin collections are not expected to be affected and emergency service vehicles will be escorted through the works.
