YOU don’t have to be born into Royalty to be a Queen, not in the Royal Burgh of Peebles anyway.

For this town celebrates its own monarch family each year.

And on Wednesday afternoon schoolgirl Jenna Jones was proclaimed 2019 Queen of the Beltane Festival.

The sun shone in a cloudless sky and townsfolk gathered outside Peebles Community Centre waiting to greet the new Queen and her Court.

Cheering schoolchildren applauded as the names of the delighted pupils were announced within the hall, and when it came to the announcement of this year’s Queen, a clearly shocked Jenna threw her hands to her mouth gasping in sheer surprise.

The 12-year-old from Priorsford Primary School told the Peeblesshire News that she feels very grateful and lucky to be chosen.

She added: “I’m so excited to begin the role of Beltane Queen and all that’s involved.”

Jenna’s parents, Lisa and Mike were standing outside waiting to catch a glimpse of their daughter when she exited the community hall. And as she came out the sun wasn’t the only thing beaming.
