FINAL preparations are underway for the annual Traquair Medieval Fayre later this month.

Scotland’s oldest inhabited house will host the authentic weekend of medieval mayhem and mischief in the historic grounds.

Attracting participants from all over the UK the fayre welcomes everyone from re-enactors, knights in armour, men at arms, to living history enthusiasts.

Lydia Ferguson, a promoter for the event said: “Traquair holds the only truly authentic Medieval Fayre in Scotland, and there will be entertainers and activities for all the family to enjoy.

“From spectacular jousting displays and battle re-enactments on the grassed avenue, to combat demonstrations and falconry displays in front of the house, there is something for everyone.”

Live canon firing will get the event up and running, starting the whole programme of events on Saturday, May 25.

Up in the old walled garden visitors enter a virtual medieval village with a wealth of traders and demonstrators from a medieval forge, green woodworking, armoury, fletchers, rush hat making, shoemakers and medieval games and toys.

Children can enjoy a sword and helmet making workshop, jester shows and storytelling with Mistress Quill.

And the opportunity to have a go at longbow archery or take part in the children’s army and attack the knights.

For those that like to find out about the grizzlier side of Medieval life, the Perth executioner will be on hand to explain his instruments of torture.

Be careful that you are not selected for a go in the stocks.

Music is always a highlight of the Fayre and this year will feature wandering minstrels Hautbois with their handcart full of strange and wonderful early instruments.

In the courtyard and Chapel, you can hear the medieval singers, the Gargoyles, as well as the Galloway Consort on Sunday.

And Gaita will entertain in the garden with early music and dance.

Visitors will also have an opportunity to see around the house and learn about Traquair’s connection with Mary Queen of Scots and the early Scottish kings and queens.

Food and drink will be on offer from the Garden Café as well as the Medieval Coffee Bar.

Home brewed Traquair Fayre Ale from the 300-year-old brewery, wood fired pizza, buffalo burgers, and a spit roast pig will also add to the medieval feast.

The Fayre takes place on Saturday and Sunday, May 25 and 26, from 11am to 5pm.

Tickets include all entertainment and entry to the house.

And reduced-price tickets are available until May 22.

Adults, children, and family tickets are available from £8 to £36 advance, and £10 to £38 standard.

Dogs on leads are also welcome.
