TWEEDDALE residents are being urged to use water wisely this summer by Change Works in Peebles.

As part of Home Energy Scotland’s partnership with Scottish Water, locals will be given free water saving packs and advice on how to save water, energy and money at home.

Last year around 300 Peebles residents received a pack, and this year the partnership project will also be visiting Innerleithen and West Linton.

Change Works in Peebles is a pilot energy efficiency project intended to help homeowners, private landlords, businesses and community groups in Tweeddale improve the energy performance rating of their properties, in line with Scottish Government guidance, while helping them save on energy bills and reduce their carbon footprint.

The project is funded by the Scottish Government and delivered by environmental-charity Change Works, in partnership with Borders Council and Home Energy Scotland.

Niall Murphy, Energy Advisor Home Energy Scotland, said: “Each person living in Scotland uses about 150 litres of water every day.

“It takes energy to pump and treat the water so that we have clean, fresh drinking water every time we turn on a tap.

“Cutting down on our water waste can also help to save energy at home where that water is heated.

“This in turn helps to save money on energy bills and small changes to our everyday behaviour can have a big impact.

“For example, if everyone in a four-person family spent one minute less in the shower they could save nearly £75 a year on their energy bills.”

The water-saving packs include gadgets like shower timers, toilet cistern devices and tap aerators, depending on suitability for each home.
