THE long-standing Yarrow Valley tradition of Blanket Preaching takes place later this month.

An annual event dating back to the 17th century, the Blanket Preaching Service will take place at St Mary’s Kirkyard in the Yarrow Valley.

One of the most atmospheric settings in the Yalley, the picturesque St Mary’s Kirkyard lays nestled up on the hill above St Mary’s Loch.

And the Kirkyard is steeped in history with records showing that there was a place of worship there as early as 1275.

Andy Wright, Director of the Ettrick and Yarrow Development Company said: “In the seventeenth century Yarrow was the scene of religious dissent.

“Presbyterian Covenanter preachers and their followers were forbidden to attend church services so were forced to worship outdoors.

“And they often had to huddle in blankets for protection from the elements.

“The annual open-air service at St Marys Kirkyard is held on the fourth Sunday of July every year to commemorate this period in history.”

People come from far and wide to attend the traditional church service, which takes place whatever the weather.

Locals, church members, visitors and some four-legged friends will be welcomed by a lone piper as they gather for the short 20-minute service.

This year it will be led by Rev Jim Wallace, locum minister for Ettrick and Yarrow Churches.

Fans of the beloved Blanket Preaching Service can take part on Sunday, July 28 at 3pm.

And everyone is welcome to stay afterwards as the service will be followed by teas and cakes at the nearby Cappercleuch Hall.
