A WEATHER warning and a flooding alert have been issued for the Scottish Borders today.

The storms are also expected to continue throughout the weekend.

Heavy rain has already left many roads with deep standing water.

And water courses throughout the region are starting to rise.

A spokesman for the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) said: "A band of heavy, persistent rain will push northward from the early morning across southern and central Scotland on Friday.

"This may lead to localised flooding from surface water and smaller rivers.

"Built up areas and the transport network are at greater risk where possible impacts could include: flooding of low-lying land, roads, properties and disruption to travel particularly around the Friday morning rush hour.

"Further heavy and thundery showers are likely to develop across the area later on Friday and Saturday."

A yellow warning for rain is in force today from the Met Office.

A rain and thunder warning is in place for tomorrow while a thunder warning has been issued for Sunday.
