MORE than 30 members of Robert Coltart’s family will be present to see the unveiling of a sculpture dedicated to the Galashiels weaver-turned-sweetmaker on Friday.

The ceremony at Market Square will see Coltart’s world famous lullaby Ally Bally Bee performed by folk singer Jimmie Macgregor, who performed the song on national television in the 1950s, helping to popularise it.

Schoolchildren who won a Coulter’s Candy inspired design competition run by Energise Galashiels Trust will also hang ribbons to the statue to symbolise how Robert Coltart advertised his products as he travelled around the town and the Scottish Borders.

The statue was created by sculptor Angela Hunter and is part of a new town trail created by Scottish Borders Council, and supported by the Scottish Government, who provided a £1.18 million grant last year to help fund a number of regeneration projects in the town.

The unveiling is scheduled for 10am.
