RURAL Tweedsmuir's rich heritage is about to be put on the map with the launch of a new online and on-the-ground project.

The lands leading down from the source of the Tweed are steeped in history.

Since the bronze age, Upper Tweeddale's hills, rivers, moors and forests have provided the setting for history to unravel.

From the wandering days of Merlin and the English invasions, through the lawless years of the Border Reivers and the religious divides during the Civil Wars, the remote lands have many a story to tell.

Poetry was written, songs were sung, and a big dam was built.

The Tweedsmuir Community Company (TCC), which was formed over a decade ago to preserve the historic Crook Inn, has been allocated funding to bring a lot of those stories to life.

As well as developing an online museum website, the Tweedsmuir Destination Development Project will see the creation of digital audio-tours of the area.

And the TCC is also looking to appoint a heritage development officer to help make the ambitious project become a reality.

Duncan Davidson, chairman of the TCC, told us: "This is great news for our community and for tourism in the region.

"The project will involve the community, will make visits to the area enjoyable and informative, and will enhance resources for Upper Tweed."

The Heritage Lottery Fund has provided just under £68,000 towards The Tweedsmuir Destination Project with Scottish Borders Council's Community Fund making up the shortfall for the required £75,088 costs.

Over the coming 18 months walking, cycling and touring routes through Upper Tweeddale will be created with digital audio accompaniment through an app.

As well as featuring the area's rich history, the new online museum will be developed to also provide information on services available in and around the area.

Mr Davidson added: "The walking, cycling and touring routes will be signposted, both in digital and written form.

"The information will include the background stories of the landscape and local history."

The Tweedsmuir Community Company is currently advertising for the part-time heritage officer to be in post for 18 months.
