CLIMATE change activists are set to launch a Peebles branch of Extinction Rebellion this weekend.

Following recent campaigning across the wider Borders, a Peebles-specific affinity group is being created to hold more localised awareness drives and protests.

Peebles Extinction Rebellion is due to meet for the first time on Sunday in the Drill Hall.

Local Extinction Rebellion activist Catriona Hamilton told us: "Many people don’t know about the impact the climate crisis is having on their doorstep, let alone worldwide.

"There is already a high likelihood of climate refugees here in the UK and real action has to be taken now to tackle global warming.

"You only need to look back to recent floods we had here in Peebles to see what is happening."

During the meeting, which is from 3pm to 5pm, activists will present 'Heading for Extinction (and what to do about it)’.

And they are urging anyone who is concerned about the environment to join them.

Catriona added: "This affects all of us - it is definitely not just something you hear about on television when there is a demonstration in London."

Last weekend Scottish Borders Extinction Rebellion held protests in Galashiels - see page 10.
