AROUND 40 concerned residents rallied to the first meeting of Extinction Rebellion in Peebles on Sunday.

The audience was enlightened on the impending climate crisis facing the planet.

Elena Kerr and Joanne Topalian, who are both local members of Extinction Rebellion, presented Climate Change: Heading for Extinction (and what to do about it).

As well as demonstrating how they believe life as we know it is heading for extinction, which included scientific evidence and statistics, the presentation also focussed on what can be done to meet targets and avoid a runaway climate change.

A minute's silence was held for reflection midway through the presentation.

The campaigning achievements of Extinction Rebellion in its first year were also discussed.

And a conversation followed between everyone in attendance over tea and home baking.

An Introduction to Extinction Rebellion event is now planned for Tuesday, November 12 at the Hub on School Brae, with a 7pm start.

A spokeswoman for Extinction Rebellion Scottish Borders West told us: "Anyone interested in getting involved is welcome to come along and find out more."

This weekend there will be a Kid’s Art Workshop at Peebles Community Centre between 2pm and 4pm, where children can bring their adults along to create some climate change artwork.

The spokeswoman added: "The children's artwork may be included in a local art exhibition alongside Environmental Artivists on the Green for everyone of all ages."
