PEEBLES Town bus service has been suspended, following a fire at the high school.

As reported earlier this afternoon, pupils and staff were evacuated following the lunchtime blaze.

And now Borders Buses has said its Town Service will be suspended until 5pm.

A spokesperson added: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Fire crews were called to the Peebles High just before 1pm.

It is understood the blaze started in the art department.

And latest reports from the emergency services state that everyone has been evacuated from the building safely.

South of Scotland MSP Michelle Ballantyne said: “This is devastating news.

“I’m relieved to hear that so far there have been no casualties. My thoughts are with the students and staff at Peebles High School.

“I believe we owe a massive debt of gratitude to our firefighters and emergency workers who are on-site managing the situation.

“This will be heart-breaking for the staff and pupils, and over the next few days I know council officials will be working very hard to ensure that pupils’ education will not be disrupted.”
