Rain and wind failed to dampen the festive spirit at Peebles Christmas Lights Switch On last Thursday.

Severe weather warnings weren’t going to stop Santa arriving through the town with Beltane Queen Jenna Jones to light up Peebles.

Despite the decision to cancel the Christmas market stalls, local businesses came to the rescue and opened up their doors.

Both Ramblers Coffee Shop and Carols Creations hosted stall holders and locals were able to purchase gifts.

David Elder of the Christmas Lights Committee said: “Due to the bad weather forecast we had to take the decision on Wednesday lunchtime to cancel the outdoor market.

“This is something we did not take lightly and was a huge blow for the event.

“We are very grateful to the people of Peebles that turned out on the night to support the switch-on despite the wind and rain. The town is looking fabulous again this year for Christmas.

And the committee say the dazzling display is with thanks to the support of Stobo Castle, Haystoun Financial and Property Services and Holland & Sherry.

David added: “There were about 150 people who turned out for the switch-on. The funfair coming along made for a great atmosphere despite the awful weather.

“Our very own silver band played carols outside the Tontine steps which got everyone in the spirit.”

Radio Borders broadcast live at the event where the town’s royalty, in the form of Beltane Queen Jenna Jones, flicked the switch illuminating Peebles in festive cheer for 2019.
