PEEBLES Community Trust is in discussions to take over the running of a public toilet under threat of closure.

Month after month the subject of the School Brae toilets remains firmly on the agenda for Peebles Community Council.

The pay-to-enter public loos located in close proximity to the High Street are subject to frequent attacks of vandalism.

On a number of occasions the toilets have also been closed due to damaged coin mechanisms on the doors.

Chairman of the Peebles Community Trust, Lawrie Hayworth updated members of Peebles Community Council on proposals to save the public facility.

He said: “There has been some discussion within the PCT about the possibility of adopting the management and the income of the toilets on School Brae, and whether or not the disabled toilet could be enhanced to include a changing space for adults who require a changing facility with their carer.”

“We would like to explore that with the council because it’s on our doorstep and we could incorporate that as part of an employment opportunity with the cleaning and opening of the School Brae Hub as its getting busier.

"Therefore it might work well as a little package of community activity.”
