PEEBLES Community Council is hoping to put the brakes on speeding along a dangerous road in the town.

Residents have flagged up the issue of motorists putting the foot down on the straight road at South Parks.

Although previous calls for traffic calming in the busy residential area failed, residents have raised their concerns again with Tweeddale ward councillors, Peebles Community Council, and police.

And the completion of the new housing development at the top of South Parks, will mean and increase in vehicles using the already busy road.

Scottish Borders Council put in speed tapes at the top of the road but shortly after doing this, roadworks commenced which meant no accurate data could be recorded.

Community councillor Peter Maudsley explained: “Unfortunately the tapes were put in a bad position and didn’t actually pick up most of the cars. Also road works came in very quickly after the tapes went down which screwed up the readings.

“The interesting thing is the data that they did record there’s an average of one car per hour speeding in South Parks. Generally speaking for the police to actually try to be there and catch someone it’s not cost effective. But there is an issue there and probably mostly from the Industrial Estate.

“The trouble with the positioning of the tapes was that they were right up by the Industrial Estate so cars turning out of there wouldn’t have picked up speed.”

The local authority has said there is money in the pot for traffic calming to be implemented in South Parks.

Mr Maudsley added: "The council has agreed to put down new speed tapes in March which will be better located. The officer also said there is money in the budget for doing something to the road should the data reflect the need, which I think we agree is going to happen.”
