A terminally ill woman is afraid she will catch a fatal dose of coronavirus before her wedding day.

Cori Taylor, from Peebles, was born with a form of dwarfism and has a number of health issues.

But now the engaged 27-year-old is terrified COVID-19 will kill her before she weds her fiancé.

She said: "I have been told that if I catch this virus it will more than likely kill me, because I have a very low immune system and only have the use of one lung.”

Cori suffers from scoliosis, a condition causing curvature of the spine, which means her backbone is "crushing" her lungs, she says.

Doctors have advised she is not strong enough to have surgery to prolong her life.

In 2017, she met partner Jamie on a dating website and was delighted when he proposed the following year.

As most of Cori’s money goes towards paying for carers, the couple embarked on a fundraising campaign to fulfil Cori’s “bucket list” and pay for their dream wedding.

But the big day has been put on the back burner due to virus restrictions. Meanwhile, Cori is 'shielding' because she is so vulnerable.

“I have lots of different illnesses and disabilities which make it hard sometimes to live an independent life,” said Cori.

The threat of catching the virus is not Cori's only concern, though – her carers are struggling to attend shifts.

She says social work officers have asked Jamie to live with her full-time in case they cannot get staff to care for her.

She said: “Being in isolation is extremely stressful as only carers and my partner are allowed to see me.

"I have a 21-hour care package but because schools are off it affects what my staff can work. If there is no care for me, my partner has to do it, which isn’t his job. Before this virus, Jamie would stay for three days and then go home.”

Cori is pleading with people to refrain from stockpiling and says she is struggling to get a delivery slot from supermarkets despite being high priority.

“It’s very difficult getting food and cleaning products because everyone is stockpiling when there’s actually no need for it. I get pads on prescription and wasn’t sure what the situation would be, so my partner picked up extra from the supermarket and people were making comments under their breath.

“We can’t even get a delivery slot with the supermarket which means my carer and partner has to go into the supermarket which is a bigger risk for me. We need to make sure we always have antibacterial sprays.”

Cori feels like a prisoner in her own home and says she should be out “making memories”.

The lockdown is taking its toll on her mental health as she has not been out in over a month.

“With my life being limited, I shouldn’t have to be stuck in the house. It’s really affecting my anxiety and mental health. I have a very slim chance of survival if I catch this virus, which is extremely scary to hear.”

Cori's wish is to wed Jamie and do everything she has set her heart on before it is too late.

She added: “Meeting Jamie has changed my life and helped me believe in myself. It’s given me a wakeup call. It’s time to start making memories because I don’t know how much time I have left.”
